GIS Applications Developer

Location: Silver Spring, MD
Position Description
  • Will work with System Development Division to provide IT support to NOAA National Geodetic Survey (NGS).
  • Will provide geospatial modeling and mapping applications development support within NGS in accordance with its mission.
  • Will maintain NOAA Shoreline Data Explorer including troubleshooting the system, maintaining the GeoServer, and improving and debugging source code for the web mapping application.
  • Will maintain in-house web applications for data loading including improving and debugging application source code. Will consult with customers in other divisions to make additional improvements to the NOAA Shoreline Data Explorer and other related applications and assist customers with GIS software and processing GIS data.
  • Will support software release and quality control management in the System Development Division.
  • Will provide other duties and IT support as assigned.
Required Skills
  • 6-8 years of experience with GIS application development.
  • Must have experience using the following technologies: ArcGIS Desktop, Open Source GIS, GeoServer, OpenLayers, Oracle Spatial, Glassfish, and UNIX.
  • Requires experience with one or more of the following programming languages/frameworks: Java, JavaScript, Python, SQL, PL/SQL, Google Web Toolkit, PERL, Java Servlets, HTML, KML, and XML.
  • Knowledge of enterprise database design and development and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards such as WMS and WFS, required.
  • Must have experience performing cutting edge research on the collection, use, and interpretation of Coastal Mapping Program data.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to work independently, or as a team member. Familiarity with NOAA NGS and the mission of NGS Coastal Mapping Program is a big plus.
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
  • BS in GIS, Cartography, Computer Science, related discipline, or equivalent.
