Process Operator - Water and Waste Management

Location: Houston, TX
Under close supervision, performs the day-to-day duties associated with the operation of a water or wastewater facility. Has working knowledge of required procedures, equipment and operating standards and is able to resolve minor routine problems. Reports to the Facility Operations Supervisor and requires guidance to operate the facility.

Essential Job Functions Water Treatment Plant:
  • Controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption.
  • Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, valves to regulate flow.
  • Monitors, adjusts controls to regulate flow, pressure and distribution of water.
  • Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment using hand tools / power tools.
  • Diagnose process and mechanical problems, troubleshoot basic equipment and take corrective action.
  • Tests water samples and records data.

Wastewater Treatment Plant:
  • Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing and disposal equipment to control flow and processing of sewage.
  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and necessary.
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
  • Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage, through filtering, settlings, aeration and sludge digestion processes.
  • Maintains log or operations and records meter and gauge readings. Collects sewage samples and conducts lab tests using testing equipment.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls as needed and work extended hours to accommodate site needs.
  • Other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School or GED * Stable work history experience working in utility operations preferred
  • Minimum C level water and/or wastewater treatment certificate. B Level water and/or wastewater is preferred.
  • Associate's degree in a science or technical area strongly preferred.
  • Two to Five years of increasingly responsible experience in the operations and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant facility
  • Knowledge of federal and state safety, health, and environmental regulations
  • Excellent time management skills; ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks effectively.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate with others through oral and written media.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, outside entities, and the public.
  • Ability to use standard, Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel Software.

  • Good mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills
  • Detail oriented with strong follow-up skills
  • Valid driver’s license and clear driving record is required
  • Good physical condition and able to lift 25-50 pounds
  • Ability to work extended hours and at times, on weekends and holidays if needed

  • Physical ability to perform essential functions of the job
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary
