Anatomic Pathology Supervisor

Job description
To develop, supervise and establish policies and procedures for Anatomic Pathology Services at the Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States Regional Lab and the all satellite Anatomic Pathology (AP) Labs and to ensure that the operation is in compliance with professional standards, regional guidelines, safety regulations and regulatory licensing requirements.
 
Essential Functions:
• Develops, implements, and maintains a service delivery strategy for Anatomic Pathology services that supports the providers in providing quality care.
• Provides training and administers competency to all staff in the Anatomic Pathology Department. 
• Coordinates the activities in the Ambulatory Surgery Centers to support the processing of frozen section specimens, fresh specimens, and those specimens needing special handling.
• Oversees of FNA (Fine Needle Aspiration) and cytology collection service. 
• Oversees, in conjunction with ITS department, the AP Information System and coordinates the interface between the AP Information System interconnectivity with LIS and EMR.
• Evaluates and recommends instrumentation for Anatomic Pathology department. 
• Investigates and develops new technology in conjunction with the pathologists and providers. Works with other Kaiser regions in implementing new technology in histopathology and cytopathology.
• Interacts with external reference labs in providing additional Anatomic Pathology support for testing not performed in house. Manages quality issues between Kaiser Permanente and external reference labs.
• Develops, manages, and maintains payroll, non-payroll and capital equipment budgets within approved budgetary guidelines.
• Interfaces with providers and office staff regarding collection variances for surgical and cytology pathology. 
• Daily assesses the case workload for gross dissection. Coordinates the case workload for gross dissection prioritizing cases based on tissue processing schedules established by the Histology technical staff. Assesses and coordinates the workflow from gross dissection to histology as needed to assure optimal turn-around-time requirements.
• Performs and monitors all pertinent documentation to include all QC and QA Variances in accordance to regulatory requirements and previously established protocols, and brings all corrective actions to the attention of the Regional Lab Senior Manager and/or Pathologists of discrepancies with reference laboratories.
• Participates in the Environmental Health and Safety Team in the capacity of the Chemical Hygiene Coordinator for Anatomic Pathology chemicals.
• Ensures that all cases logged in for surgical pathology and cytologyexamination has been assigned the correct accession numbers with the correct pre-operative and clinical histories; and if necessary, research operative notes in HealthConnect to determine gross dissection priorities and dissection approach.
• Assists the pathologists in gross dissection and dictation of surgical pathology specimens as prescribed by previously established protocols. Prepares and maintains related reagents and supplies and alerts Pathology Laboratory Assistant for inventory needs.
• Performs other related duties as directed and assigned.

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
• Minimum six (6) years of experience in Histopathology or cytopathology required.
• Prior leadership experience required.
Education
• Bachelor's degree in medical technology, histotechnology, cytotechnology OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
• Certification as a Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist, or Pathologist Assistant by the ASCP or equivalent certifying organization required.

Additional Requirements:
• Knowledge in all Anatomic Pathology functions required.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations, Chemical safety, accrediting requirements and data analysis required.
• Knowledge of government regulations/ regulatory compliance required.
• Experience with CAP, COLA, and HCFA inspections required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• MS, MA and/or MBA preferred.
• Professional affiliation preferred.
 
Notes:
• Posting is for 8am-4:30pm; however, the role requires time on all shifts with the staff and workflow of Anatomic Pathology.  
• Weekend coverage responsibility for entire RLR operation is expected of the position as part of all leaders covering weekends.
