Laboratory Lead (Wine Industry)

Location: Glen Ellen, CA
The Lab Lead proactively assists the Winemaker by performing wine laboratory activities for our Benziger Commercial brand wines made at Imagery Estate Winery. Responsible for every facet of laboratory operation, implements and carries out juice and wine analysis from Grape through bottling QC including tracking and record keeping. Ideal candidates will be very organized, accurate, be able to efficiently multi-task, have a good understanding of winemaking concepts and have a positive attitude.

  • Preparation of daily/weekly schedules including coordinating lab analysis and activities with the cellar schedule.
  • Creating and updating lab spread sheets and data base to oversee wine chemistry change to ensure health of wines. Including preparing our grower feedback information per lot.
  • Perform all analysis on juice and wine, prepare solutions – Write work orders for cellar additions as instructed.
  • Oversees wines’ health through performing analysis and micro work and review of data and tasting, including bottling QC. Report any concern to the Winemaker in timely manner.
  • Trial preparation and researching new fining products. Plan and run bench trails trials and make reports of results.
  • Data entry and wine tracking using AMS (Lab analysis, Cellar Work Orders, Shipping bills) for Imagery and other facilities including monthly bulk inventories.
  • Train and Supervise seasonal lab tech(s) at Imagery Lab.
  • Supervision/Action of: Rehydration /Addition of Yeast to tanks, Nutrients, enzyme additions
  • Participate and leads in R&D projects pertaining to area of expertise.
  • Create lab budget and order lab and fermentation supplies – track inventory and expenses

  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point
  • A./A.S. in Fermentation Science, Biological Science, Chemistry or related field with 5 years wine laboratory experience
  • Excellent communication verbal and written skills.
  • A great attitude and positive approach.
  • A self-starter with the ability to establish priorities, and proceed with objectives without supervision. Able to assess workloads and establish priorities and delegate tasks
  • Team player
  • Ability to handle a variety of projects simultaneously
  • Excellent and proactive communication verbal and written skills.
  • Flexible in work schedule. Willing to work overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed during harvest and bottling
  • Thorough aptitude and knowledge of wines. Passion and curiosity of wine
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus

  • Required to stand long periods of time, required to reach with hands and arms, sit, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds of weight.
  • Occasionally works outside in all weather conditions.
