Director of Nursing

Position Overview: 
Under direction of the Director of Health Services, plans and coordinates nursing services of Fellowship Village.  Responsible for overseeing all nursing personnel, patient care and assessment.  Participates as a member of the facility's management team in planning, policy formulation and administrative decision making with particular reference to the role, functions and operations of the facility's nursing services. 
Essential Functions & Responsibilities: 
  • Manages, directs and supervises all nursing personnel in the completion of their responsibilities.
  • Develops a schedule to ensure that an adequate number of appropriately trained professional and auxiliary personnel are on duty at all times to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice at the facility under the direction of the Director of Health Services.
  • Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and staff.
  • Responsible for staff performance and staff development.  Assists with planning, conducting and scheduling of in-service training classes, on-the-job training and orientation programs to ensure quality, effective care.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Health Services, shall plan, develop and implement a budget for staffing and services.
  • Monitors the overall care of residents and provides on-going assessments of residents'  needs. 
  • Continually assesses the quality of care rendered to residents and evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the guidelines of the facility.  Provides written weekly reports or as requested.
  • Meets with new admissions and conducts initial needs assessment.
  • Routinely reviews resident charts following medically appropriate guidelines.
  • Responds to resident needs and concerns in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Maintains an adequate level of supplies and equipment to meet the day-to-day operational needs of the facility and residents.
  • Responds to resident needs and concerns in a timely and courteous manner.  Ensures that the residents' rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints, are well-established, maintained and communicated to the nursing staff, etc. at all times.
  • Ensures that all nursing personnel, residents, visitors, etc. follow governmental and facility-established safety regulations to include fire protection/prevention, smoking regulations, infection control, etc.
  • Ensures that nursing staff follow policies implemented for waste disposal, storage and dispensing of drugs and controlled substances, health, cleanliness, etc.
  • Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the facility.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all resident information and periodically re-enforces the policy with the nursing staff.
  • Serves on various committees of the facility (i.e. Infection Control, Utilization Review, Quality Assurance and Assessment, etc.)
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities as required or as may be assigned.
  • Collaborates with other departments, CCRCs, nursing facilities, etc. regarding resources and services to improve resident care and nursing staff development.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends and practices in field of expertise.
  • Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.
  • Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services.
  • Complies with periodic physical examinations as may be required or requested.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and current New Jersey license as an RN - Registered Nurse.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a Director of Nursing in a CCRC, nursing home, hospital or like facility.
  • Ability to deal professionally with local, state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and cooperate with and respond effectively to the instructions and requests from a diverse group of residents, visitors and staff and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to lift or move items weighing up to 60 pounds without assistance, stand for long periods of time, bend, reach and perform other such functions as usually performed by a registered nurse.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them.
  • Proficiency with use of computers and application software.
  • Work frequently requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.  Availability for evening and weekend work and willingness to be on-call 24 hours per day to handle emergencies are essential.
  • Ability to respond to and work with a mature resident population, creating a warm, caring and supportive environment for the enjoyment of the residents and to promote this philosophy to all employees.
